“Don’t forget me.”

These were the last words I heard from many of the children that I met on my first trip to Nicaragua in 2012 through a high school trip. Those words impacted me profoundly and I went back two months later to volunteer in the same village with the children and teens I had met. As I was entering college that Fall, I knew I wanted to do something for the community. After assessing the needs of the community through various community meetings and focus groups, it came to my attention that both children and adults wanted a library in the village as a way to provide educational support and materials to the children and adolescents in their free time and as a way to support them in completing their homework. Through different grants made available to me through my college, I was able to purchase a building in the village in 2014 and remodel it, as well as buy all the materials needed for the library.

The library has now become a safe haven for the children and adolescents in the village where violence and drugs are prevalent. We have one employee who runs our programs on a daily basis. The mothers of various children also volunteer their time for special events.
